A Brief Summary
January in Europe is not a particularly wonderful place truth be told (at least not weather-wise). There are very few parts of the continent that are not cold, snowy, rainy or overcast. Even the Mediterranean sees severe storms every now and again at this time. So instead of trying to avoid the cold, maybe go somewhere that embraces it. Vienna and Bratislava are barely an hours drive apart, but very different cities. The former frequently tops the lists of “nicest places to live on earth” and comes complete with beautiful architecture, a rich (not always positive) history, a vibrant music and arts scene. The latter is visually similar to Prague, but retaining a much more authentic feel, possibly due to the lack of stag and hen dos! Either way, this part of Europe is cold in January, so wrap up warm and enjoy wandering around these 2 great cities you probably hadn’t considered before

Cold, humid and snowy winters with little reliable sunshine, give way to the steadily warmer and sunnier spring months of April and May across Austria. While wintery precipitation all but disappears by April, it is often replaced with thundery showers which last throughout the spring and summer and into mid-Autumn. Sunshine levels peak in July, but May to August sees similarly bright skies. Temperatures in winter can remain below 0°c for days / weeks at a time and can drop very low when the winds blow from the east. Warm winter days are rare. Spring can be very warm or hot on occasion, but often mild until May when temperatures then average 21°c. Highs in summer reach mid 30’s°c a few times a year. Autumns start warm and sunny, but cool quickly and by November winter is back. The East of the country is marginally sunnier and warmer with less snow than the mountainous west.
