How about a trip to Hokkaido / Eastern Honshu, Japan

Hokkaido / Eastern Honshu, Japan

SummaryA Brief Summary

If snow is your “thing” and you like the stuff really deep and really fluffy, then northern and eastern Japan should be on your bucket (shovel?) list. During the month of February it snows here almost constantly, with often relatively light falls of snow, interchanged with days of heavier, deeper accumulations. Images of coaches driving through roads cleared from snowmounds 30ft high are not, unlike many things we see nowadays, photoshopped or edited, they are very real and demonstrate clearly the huge quantities of snow that can fall in this region each winter. But of course, being Japanese, everything still runs like clockwork, despite conditions that would render almost all other locations around the world utterly helpless!

WeatherAbout the Weather

Heavily influenced by the trade winds blowing from the northwest across the Sea of Japan, northern Honshu has a humid and subtropical climate except the very far north which is more akin to Hokkaido’s more temperate climate. Winters are cold and very snowy, with severe snowstorms common from late Dec to early Mar and excessive cloud cover during this time, although temperatures seldom drop much below 0°c during the day. Spring is bright and mild until May which is warm (24°c) and quite sunny and also the driest month of the year. Summers are hot at 29°c, wet and humid with Aug being the only month seeing reliable spells of lengthy sunshine. Autumn is very warm in Sep and much cooler by Nov before the heavy winter snows arrive
