How about a trip to United States Texas

United States Texas Jan

SummaryA Brief Summary

Texas is a country in it’s own right. Isn’t it? You’d be forgiven for thinking so driving around here. The largest of the contiguous states and one in which its residents are perhaps more fiercely proud than any other. If you want to see Texas and don’t drive. Don’t bother. You simply will not be able to get around. Larger than France and with public transport between cities either very long bus rides or short(ish) flights, having a car is paramount, but also good fun, giving you the freedom to stop at the small settlements and old-west style towns you’d otherwise bypass without a thought.
There are 5 main towns in Texas: Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio and El Paso. All miles from each other. From blazing desert in the far west around El Paso, to subtropical forests in the far east and the Caribbean coast and beaches in the deep south, this State is a varied hotch-potch of geographical wonders.
El Paso feels about as Mexican as it’s possible to in the US courtesy of its huge Latino population and proximity to Mexico and is a great location for exploring this desert region and it’s lengthy US / Mexican history.
Austin, the state capital, is growing rapidly and has begun a shift in recent years from slightly-too-quirky for most, to a slightly-hip, trendy-but-bit-strange, alternative centre of the state with a massive music scene. This really is fast becoming the place to go in summers for live music events, not just in the US, but globally, with bands of every genre flocking here en-masse!
Dallas, the second largest city in Texas and one built on massive wealth from times gone by when oil and cotton ruled the world. This wealth is evident today in the gleaming skyscrapers downtown, the high-end dining, world-class museums, massive houses and array of pricey shops on just about every large street. Enormous farms and ranches spread out from the suburbs as far as the eye can see and produce insane quantities of highly-prized Texan beef, a food of which the Texans are exceptionally passionate and proud of in equal measure! It is also a very sporty and outdoorsy city, despite the bonkers heat of summers here!
Houston is Texas’ largest city and one that is lived outdoors predominantly, as it probably should be with year-round warmth and sunshine. Fast becoming a golfing mecca and event & festival hub, Houston is more diverse and culturally varied than other cities in the southern US and while initially it appears to be very much a business city, it’s slowly moving with the times to attract tourists and this will only continue as word of mouth spreads that this is in fact a large, sprawling city with a great deal to offer.
San Antonio probably doesn’t conjure up many images of a heaving nightlife scene, vibrant daylight culture, a huge amount of wining and dining possibilities as well as plenty of arts, events, museums and historical exhibitions to see. But that is exactly what you get here. Surprisingly large despite playing third or fourth fiddle to better known cities in Texas, SA is quickly putting itself on the map!

WeatherAbout the Weather

Texas’s weather is relatively extreme in nature, with only the winter months mostly devoid of anything too significant in the way of temperature, rainfall or snow, although early 2022 saw plentiful snow and severe cold for several days, paralysing the state. They are also quite sunny with more than 6 hours of sunshine a day, relatively dry, and have temperatures of 14-16°c on average, although hotter weather can occur bringing temperatures into the high 20’s°c for a few days. Spring is mostly sunny but with increasing levels of thundery showers. These can become severe during late April and early May as hot and humid air from the Gulf of Mexico collides with colder, drier air from the Rockies, causing instability in the atmosphere and leading to severe thunderstorms, large and damaging hail and tornados. Summer is the driest season, although not without heavy showers, sunny, averaging 10 hours a day and hot with temperatures averaging 36°c, but regularly topping 40°c. Autumn is very warm and bright, but further heavy, thundery showers. Hurricanes frequently impact coastal regions towards Houston and Galveston, bringing torrential falls of rain and strong winds, however direct impacts occur only every few years.
