How about a trip to United States Deep South
A Brief Summary
The “Deep South” is a cultural icon among US regions, with a devout, diverse and often less wealthy population than elsewhere in this huge country. What this means is you get integrity here, people just going about their business the way they have for many, many years. Much of the deep south’s history makes for highly uncomfortable reading, whatever your race, colour or creed. It is not a part of US or global history anyone should be proud of, but, on the positive side, it does make for a truly fascinating trip around this region, seeing what has been left as a poignant legacy to a truly dire time in human history. The plantation houses that remain are beautiful and many are now able to be visited and the cities throughout this region house museums and reminders of the past that ought to be visited, even if you need a stiff drink afterwards.
In terms of food and drink, the fare here is like no other in the States, and is arguably some of the very best! Rich in heritage from the diverse population, dishes like Gumbo and Jambalaya are delicacies you absolutely have to try and of course wash down with drinks like a deep Bourbon or Mississippi Punch if you’re a cocktail fan!
The most visited city in the region is New Orleans, with its vibrant French Quarter the place everyone has to see and experience. Jazz music (not everyone’s favourite) is big here and not quite as you’d find it in a 2* hotel lobby, so check out an event one evening. Maybe you’ll opt for a riverboat cruise here in the Big Easy, or take in Mardi Gras or another of the city’s many festivals, or take a trip out to the nearby bayous for some truly local sights of snapping turtles, mangroves and a huge variety of bird life.
Further long the coast you’ll reach towns like Panama City, Mobile and Gulfport, all towns with superb beaches and small, local centres where you’ll very, very quickly feel like the tourist you are in any of the huge number of diners or cafes!
Further inland cities like Atlanta, Birmingham and Memphis beckon. Atlanta is huge, home to anyone coming to see the golf at the immaculate Augusta and a city with everything you could imagine, has a mass of high-rise glass behemoths in its business district and as such caters to these with a vast number of restaurants, diners, bars and nightclubs for those seeking something more food and drink-based.
Once you reach Memphis and the State of Tennessee you’re all but leaving the deep south, but this is music country… or should that be country music?! Either way, this is the heart of the US music scene when it’s not rap, disco or Motown. This is Johnny Cash, Elvis, Dolly Parton, Shania Twain and many, many, many more country! Touring this area by music venue / idol alone is hugely popular and add on to that the cultural and historical elements just as rich here and you’ve got a 2-week vacation in Tennessee alone!

About the Weather
The deep south of the US, located on the Gulf of Mexico gives this region a very humid, subtropical climate. Cold weather is rare, but can impact this area when very large and cold air masses descend from the far north, but these rarely last long. Winters are mild with frequent showers, but often bright and temperatures just below 20°c by day and 10°c at night. Early spring is warm or very warm and the driest time of year, but still with heavy showers every few days and temperatures approaching 26°c. Summer begins in May and ends in late September / early October. Highs during this time are around 33°c, lows of 23°c, humidity of 75%, averaging 8-9 hours a day sunshine and heavy, thundery rain every other day on average. Late summer and early autumn is when the deep south is most likely to be impacted by hurricanes coming up through the Gulf of Mexico. Katrina’s devastating impact shows just how vulnerable low-lying areas such as New Orleans are to the storm surges and torrential rains brought about by these storms. October and November see slightly reduced hurricane risks and cooler weather, but also see more overcast conditions before the mild winters.
