Renowned for having a cool, wet and cloudy climate, London is a surprisingly dry city, seeing less rain than a number of places regarded for their warmth and sunshine, such as Istanbul, New York or Sydney. This rain is often light and patchy, but frequently comes in durations of several days or weeks at a time, followed by 2-3 weeks of mostly dry weather. Temperatures in London range from a cool 8°c in winter, to 24°c in late July, with temperatures below 0°c in the heart of London surprisingly rare, although in suburbs much more common in January and February. Spring can be very sunny and is the driest time of year on average, but these months can also see considerable rainfall in “bad” years, temperatures average 15°c during this time. Summers are warm, relatively sunny and reasonably dry, although this masks annual patterns whereby summers can see torrential rain and localised flooding, or near-drought conditions. Autumns start bright and mild but often turn stormy by October and November, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. These conditions persist into December and January, but with colder weather and occasional snow, although this rarely lasts more than a couple of days. Temperatures in summer can exceed 35°c and feel oppressive due to the light winds and urban heat island affect. It is often breezy throughout the year though.
