How about a trip to Turkey Central Highlands
A Brief Summary
This probably won’t feel, or look, like the Turkey you’ve come to expect, and that’s mostly because this is a region devoid of everything holiday brochures keep portraying when they talk of Turkey: Busy beaches, soft white sands, palm trees, pale calm waters and long restaurant-filled promenades. Geographically at least, Turkey’s central plateau looks and feels more like the American mid-west, or the barren rolling hills and expanses of the Balkans. Often windswept and bitterly cold in winter, but glorious in summer (barring the odd thunderstorm), this is a much more rugged and raw place to tour around than say Istanbul, or the Med.
The region stretches from Eskisehir in the west, to Kayaseri in the east and Konya to the south. At the northern heart of the region, you’ll find Ankara, Turkey’s capital. It is a relatively young town courtesy of its vast University population, so nightlife isn’t an issue here.. what is though perhaps is a clear sense of things to see and do. It’s not a favoured location and even the hardiest of tourist might struggle here for more than a day or so, unless you’re a real museum or history buff. It is similar in the other mentioned cities, where a couple of days will see you exhaust most of what they have to offer. But all is not lost. These cities are brilliant bases for exploration and this part of Turkey is wonderful for getting out and about, roaming the countryside, trekking the hills, riding the trails which extend for mile-after-mile in every direction and bring a welcome summer relief from the blazing heat of the coast. So if you’re after a place to dust off your walking boots, love a bit of Turkish cuisine (who doesn’t!), and don’t want the hassle of Istanbul, or the frustrations of hunting for the ideal sunbed on a crammed beach… give central Turkey a go!

About the Weather
The high plateau region of Turkey has a reasonably dry climate year-round with temperatures and sunshine levels fluctuating significantly. Mid-summer is hot and sunny with passing showers giving light rain, but otherwise skies are clear and highs often reach well above 30°c by day, but nights are often below 20°c. Winters are cool for the most part, but cold, or very cold conditions can affect this region from Nov to Mar, with -15°c recorded frequently during these months. Sunshine levels are supressed, especially in Dec and Jan, with barely 2 hours sunshine a day. Spring and Autumn are mild to warm, with hot spells possible and skies often bright, but with showers possible, most likely in spring.
