How about a trip to Sweden South and East
A Brief Summary
Sweden’s capital is like almost no other on earth, for many reasons. Firstly, it’s geography is what you’d call somewhat challenging, and secondly, it is exceptionally clean and unpolluted for a city of well over a million people.
Geographically the majority of the city is situated on 14 islands, interspersed by waterways, rivers, streams, lakes, canals and the Baltic Sea. This place does, in parts, resemble Venice, Italy, but travel across the waterways here is less by gondola and more ferry or large water taxi. The city itself plays host to everything you would ever look for in a large, very well developed European capital, with a cracking nightlife, bustling cafe scene, art, museums and culture all hugely catered for, not to mention a few palaces and thriving music venues.
To add to the delights of the city itself, there is a genuine sense of fresh air about the place and an easy-going nature of the people who live here.
Away from the city, the region is like virtually all of Sweden, forested areas, pot-holed and scarred by a huge number of lakes and rivers. Summers are short but warm and sunny, while winters are cold but seldom too snowy, so plan your holiday accordingly, but whatever time of year, this is one of Europe’s nicest cities and a destination very quickly becoming the go-to weekend getaway, replacing the likes of Barcelona, Rome and even Paris!
Southern Sweden is where you’ll find the majority of the country’s population, although strangely, not where its capital city is to be found. It’s second, third, fourth etc. largest cities are all located here, in the region of the country best connected to the rest of Europe as a result of the new road bridge (Öresund) connecting Malmo in Sweden, to Copenhagen in Denmark. It is also home to Gothenburg, Sweden’s largest port city and one where cruise ships frequently dock, allowing thousands of tourists to meander the streets of this charming city on the southwest coast of the country. The entire coastline, from Gothenburg south, towards Malmo, is dotted with numerous towns and significant Viking heritage, but often ones which have moved with the times to a much more sustainable and environmentally-sensitive way of living.
Geographically, the coast is where 95% of the population live, primarily due to the difficulty of traversing the harsh and unforgiving terrain inland. While not mountainous or particularly rugged, the vast number of lakes and rivers here makes it financially unviable to build extensive road or rail networks, so those communities that are found inland are often beside one of the many lakes, with summer cabins an extensive and hugely popular staycation option for the Swedes during the brief but sunny summers.

About the Weather
Almost 2/3rds of Stockholm’s annual sunshine come in the months May to August, with June being by far the sunniest month of the year. Part of this comes from the relatively settled conditions seen across the Baltic region during this time of year, but also from the northerly latitude and long summer days across eastern Sweden. Summers here are short, but warm, averaging 22°c from June to August, with 30°c reached several times a year during warmer spells. Nights average 14°c in summer and rain is seen every 3 days on average in the form of heavy showers. Autumn is mild and bright to begin with, but quickly cools and becomes much more overcast, with increased rain and snow by November. Winters are cold, cloudy and snowy, with little sunshine and temperatures above 5°c unusual from December until early March. Spring starts cold and cloudy, but is the driest season and quickly becomes sunnier, although takes until May to warm to 16°c.
