How about a trip to South Africa South
A Brief Summary
There are some cities in the world that you just need to visit… and Cape Town is one of them. It’s not the biggest, not the richest, and not the glitziest, nor does it repeatedly have celebs Instagramming themselves on its beaches or waterfront, but nonetheless you simply must go! Geographically stunning, with Table Mountain the omnipresent backdrop to many glorious beaches, including Boulders Beach and the Cape Penguins, or Camps Bay with its beautiful sands and epic scenery. Perhaps you’d prefer to look down on the city from atop Table Mountain, where the views really are incredible, looking out all the way to Robben Island, the prison in which Nelson Mandela endured nearly 3 decades, in similar fashion to Alcatraz in San Francisco, another historic custodial establishment you can visit. If notorious prisons, beaches or mountains aren’t your thing, the wine valleys surrounding this region are superb, the food is incredible, and the V&A waterfront has some magnificent restaurants where the steak and fish in particular are, when paired with local wines, simply divine!
Or… if you’re more active, there is no shortage of things to get the heart racing… and we’re not talking just a jog or bike ride, we’re talking skydiving, shark-cage diving and whale watching. If you spend a weekend or a week here and go home without a smile on your face and several wonderful stories to tell… then frankly there’s no hope for you!
Further along the coast, to the east, is South Africa’s Garden Route, and as soon as you begin your trip down here, you’ll see why it’s so-named. It is a mix of laid back, old-world South Africa and gloriously verdant scenery, all working in harmony to give you a truly wonderful experience of the southernmost shores of the African continent.
Large towns such as Port Elizabeth (now called Gqeberha) give you a charming and lively, but distinctly Mediterranean feel, with it’s miles of wonderful beaches, access to diving, surfing, sandboarding, cycling, riding and hiking, great nightlife and a coffee scene that thrives on the reputation for having some of the best in the world! Smaller towns such as East London, Grahamstown and Graaff-Reinet, with it’s beautiful architecture will be great little stop-offs on your journey. Don’t forget to pick up (and sample, of course) many of the wines from the vineyards scattered across this outstanding landscape as you meander from vineyard to vineyard.
Location
About the Weather
The southwest of South Africa has a warm and very sunny Mediterranean climate, inverted due to its southern hemisphere location. Summers here, from November to March, are warm and extremely sunny, with only a few days rain. Very hot days are rare due to the persistent breezes from the southern ocean, but there are occasionally temperatures of 40°c during this time. Spring and autumn (reversed from the northern hemisphere) are mild and bright with slightly increased rain. Winters, from June to August, is when Cape Town sees most of its rain and its temperatures are equivalent to Israel, or North Africa during the northern hemisphere winter.
