How about a trip to Slovenia
A Brief Summary
Slovenia is a small, heavily mountainous country just to the east of northern Italy, between Austria and Croatia and it is all the better for this. The far north is essentially the easternmost edge of the Alps, and as such is not only visually stunning, in both summer and winter, but has some genuinely superb winter sport resorts. Away from the lofty peaks of the north, the rest of Slovenia is almost as rugged, but would probably classify as large hills in this region, with plenty of scenic lakes dotted around for good measure (and good photos!).
While it does have a coastline on the Med… it is, erm, short, coming in at only 30km or so, with much of this taken up by jagged cliffs, small towns or large ports. There are a few beaches which are genuinely nice places to be, but this thought is shared by most of Slovenia on the truly nice days!
Its capital and by far its largest city is Ljubljana (pronounced, very roughly as, Loobliana, but with a soft “oo”!)… Anyway… the city is small, easily accessible on foot and is cracking little place to explore the quaint bridges that traverse the Ljubljana river which meanders its way through the city, the gorgeous old town, castles, museums and artistic sites, such as theatres and opera houses. While a city break is possible here, it’s highly recommended to be used as a base before heading out into the surrounding natural wonders of this delightful little country, be it for walking, hiking, biking, climbing, riding or skiing!
