How about a trip to Montserrat
A Brief Summary
If you’ve got an old atlas, the chances are it states the capital of this small and very rugged Caribbean island as the town of Plymouth. Which was correct. However, this town is now… well, under ash. About 10-20 feet of it. Sadly, the chances are you will never be allowed to see this bizarre spectacle of rooftops poking through the ash for yourself and have to make do with Google searches (other search engines are available!), as the area is strictly cordoned off due to ongoing volcanic activity from the very beast that claimed this city’s life.
However, erupting volcanos aside, Montserrat is a tiny island trying desperately to lure back previous visitors and new ones alike. Its going to be a challenge admittedly, but it does have some draws. Firstly, it’ll be far less commercialised than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean and you’ll be treated like royalty by the locals, thrilled to see you’ve chosen their little spot of paradise to holiday. Secondly, it’s really rather beautiful, with small little sandy coves tempting you to the warm waters of the Caribbean. Thirdly, it’ll feel like a home away from home, in that it really won’t take long for you to be known and recognised by the locals in their few-in-number restaurants and bars. So if the Caribbean is for you and Barbados and St Lucia are just too “busy”, Montserrat most certainly won’t be!
Location
About the Weather
Hot and humid year-round with a drier and sunnier climate than the more southerly Caribbean islands such as Martinique, St. Lucia and St. Vincent. The dry season from Jan – Jun is longer, drier and sunnier than further south in the Caribbean chain and the wet season sees less rainfall on average. Hurricanes rarely directly impact these islands, but in 2017 a series of devastating storms caused extensive and widespread damage, from which communities recovered slowly over a number of years. Rainfall is at its most intense, between the sunshine, from Jul – Nov. Temperatures seldom rise above 32°c or below 20°c.
