How about a trip to Montenegro

This is not on most people’s holiday radar. But it should be. It really should be. If you’ve ever gone to Croatia and thought, “ooh, this is nice”, or marvelled at the sights of northern Greece, then Montenegro really ought to be on your list of places to visit in Europe. And you most definitely won’t be the only one who’s missing out. So, what about beaches I hear you cry. Yep, it has those, plenty of lovely clean, sandy beaches on the edge of the Adriatic Sea. But is it just dull, lifeless and flat? Erm.. no! It’s got some awe-inspiring canyons, valleys, mountains, hills and lakes that make Austria or Switzerland sit up and take note!
Ok, so scenically it’s great. Culturally though? Well, yes, that too. It has a long, rich and highly turbulent history dating back to the Ottoman Empire and the sad Balkan wars of the 90’s, to emerge today as a very individual, independent nation, still finding it’s feet in the world, but one with a proud people, despite their diverse backgrounds and ethnicities.
And finally, the towns themselves, I don’t suppose they’re much cop? Wrong again. They are, visually, unsurprisingly, very reminiscent of the likes of Dubrovnik, Split, Sarajevo and other southeast European cities, with terracotta roofs, whitewashed facades, steep church spires and very few high rise buildings.
This really is Europe’s next big holiday destination, for everything from sun lounging to extreme sports and everything in between, so do yourselves a favour, consider overlooking the usual options and head to Montenegro. You won’t be disappointed!
