How about a trip to Mexico Far South

Mexico Far South Jun

SummaryA Brief Summary

Similar in size to, and on the northwest border of, Guatemala, lies Chiapas Province, the southernmost state in Mexico. This is not a province you should come to if luxurious living and an easy way of life are your thing. This is a rugged region of mountains, canyons, river valleys, lagoons, a plethora of Mayan ruins, lakes and waterfalls. There are towns here, but few of them offer anything of any note or significance to make what will be a significant journey to get to them. Instead, just enjoy everything that nature has to show-off here… which really is rather a lot in an otherwise very little travelled to part of the country.
Head a little north and you reach Oaxaca… First things first, this province on Mexico’s Pacific coast is pronounced “Wahacca” and not… well, anything else you might be imagining from the strange array of vowels and consonants.
Mexico is not a particularly diverse country when it comes to flora or fauna, in fact, wildlife seldom gets a billing at all, let alone first or second, but Oaxaca is an exception with a broad range of reptiles, mammals and plant life.
There are primarily two types of holiday maker here: Those seeking the coast, the waves, the beaches and the surf of the Pacific; and those wanting a trip that takes in some real culture and history in the form of ancient Mayan and Aztec ruins, as well as the quaint little gem and colonial-esque state capital of Oaxaca City.
Whichever basket you’re in, you’ll find Oaxaca to be a poor, but proud place with friendly locals and fabulous food. While getting here may be a bit of a mission, it’s one that you should genuinely consider!
The other far-south state of Mexico is that of Guerrero and by name is highly unlikely to ring any bells with travellers.. However, it’s largest city, Acapulco, is a different story altogether. Not only a city crooned about by Neil Diamond, Jason Derulo and many others, but Mexico’s answer to Rio De Janeiro, with a long sweeping bay and sandy beaches all backed by high rise buildings and hills beyond.
This is a city with aspirations of grandeur that just never quite seem to hit their mark with European visitors, perhaps because if you’re jetting off more than 11 hours to reach here, you pass over Florida, Cancun and the Caribbean to get here… all of which are hugely enticing in their own right.
Outside of Acapulco and its vibrant nightlife, Guerrero is a quiet state for tourists and one which sadly does need caution to be taken when travelling due to crime and corruption, but these affect organised tour operations far less than individual travellers and while you’re unlikely to be impacted, just something to bear in mind

WeatherAbout the Weather

The southernmost region of Mexico unsurprisingly being the closest to the equator, has a hot and humid climate year-round with daily temperatures above 33°c in all months, although very hot weather (38°c) is far less common. Nights are surprisingly cool averaging below 20°c year-round owing to the higher elevations and extensive forestation. Dec to Mar is very dry, and sunny, while May to Oct is very wet and humid and naturally more overcast during this time. Apr and Nov are transition months between the 2 distinct seasons
