How about a trip to Mexico Central Highlands
A Brief Summary
Somewhat reminiscent in feel and appearance to Barcelona, Mexico’s giant and densely populated capital city is a very typical, although much larger than average, Latin American city. The only difference is with its geographical location. Set upon a dried up lake bed and partly built on ancient Aztec ruins of the city of Tenochtitlan, surrounded on almost all sides by high mountains, including Mexico’s second highest peak and one of its most active volcanos, Popocatepetl, the city is essentially a vast sprawling mass in an even bigger, but slowly sinking, bowl.
Within this large city, your best bet to get around is public transport, this is not a car-friendly city and transport here is budget-friendly. Most people head immediately towards Zocalo, the huge square at the heart of the city (think opening James Bond sequence in Spectre!), and it’s easy to see why, it’s a wonderfully vibrant, large and diverse collection of historic buildings being slowly merged with newer, more glass-fronted facades, with cathedrals, plazas, gardens, museums, zoos and cafes galore all fanning out from here. Of note, MC has more museums than any other city in the world, as well as La Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals on earth.
Outside of the city, the land is rugged and hilly with isolated tourist towns and villages, such as Toluca and Aculco, both visitable for a day. So if you’re heading all the way down to Mexico, to perhaps lie on a beach for a week, adding on a few days to see the nations capital is something well worth considering!
If you’re looking for mod-cons and new age luxury, then the nearby state of Puebla probably isn’t the place in Mexico to start looking.. It’s a little of the old school in terms of its buildings, infrastructure and way of life. But this isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it’s rather a good thing.
The state capital of the same name is a UNESCO world heritage site and setting for all manner of architectural styles, all of which mesh together rather pleasingly, from Baroque, to Colonial to ancient forts.
If it’s large pyramids you want to see (and who doesn’t), then the suburb of Cholula is for you with the worlds largest raised platform pyramid. From both of these you can see towering and snow-capped volcanos, just in case you needed something to remind you of just how small you are in the grand scheme of things!

About the Weather
Mexico City’s geographical position at altitude and surrounded on almost all sides by mountainous terrain gives rise to significant factors affecting its climate. Temperatures are suppressed due to its high altitude, rarely exceeding 30°c and remain cool at night throughout the year, averaging 8°c in winter months (December to February) and only 12-13°c during the slightly warmer summer from June to August. Rainfall is heavily concentrated to the period May to September, peaking in July which sees heavy daily rain or hail showers. The sunniest months of the year are also the coolest and driest, from November to April, when temperatures average 22°c by day and 10°c at night. Mexico’s capital and it’s climate are representative of that seen across the rest of the central highland regions of the country
