How about a trip to India Far Northeast

India Far Northeast Jun

SummaryA Brief Summary

West Bengal (WB) is home to one of India’s best known and most visited cities, Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). A city that often conjures up images of colonial buildings with whitewashed facades and filled with quaint little tea rooms that used to see Brits of a bygone era sipping cold drinks or a strong brew at their leisure. And while not wholly accurate, some parts do present this image rather well. Other cities worth a visit are Darjeeling (of the tea fame) and Siliguri, a retail enthusiasts mecca!
National Parks here are home to the majestic Bengal tiger, a rapidly diminishing wonder of the animal kingdom and the food is (arguably) some of the best in India. So whether you’re looking for somewhere hot, humid and with a wonderfully historic past, or you’re searching for a hilly little bolt-hole to unwind and gather yourself, West Bengal can provide these and much, much more.

Jharkhand is geographically not unlike its larger neighbour, Chhattisgarh. The scenery here is awe-inspiring with waterfalls galore, forests, steep escarpments and endless shapes created by the wilds of nature. That along with the tiger and elephant sanctuary’s here make this a real nature lovers paradise and one that is thankfully a little cooler than neighbouring West Bengal, making the searing Indian heat a little more bearable.

WeatherAbout the Weather

Kolkata’s position on the northern edge of the Bay of Bengal ensures a humid climate year-round, with only February and March seeing respite from the humidity and is indicative of this region of India. It is hot all year too, with December and January the only exceptions to this, but with temperatures of 25°c it remains warm by day, however nights can feel chilly at 15°c. From February to November temperatures exceed 30°c, peaking at an average of 35°c in April and May before the monsoon rains. June to September are very wet and very humid in Kolkata, the vast majority of the regions rain coming during these 4 months. While cyclones in the Bay of Bengal aren’t as common as Atlantic hurricanes or Pacific Typhoons, they do occur and can bring catastrophic flooding to the area, inundating 1000’s of homes and making travelling around the region impossible for days or weeks. They seldom bring extreme winds though. October and November see a transition to the almost rainless winters here. Sunshine levels are never particularly high and peak in April at 8 hours a day, equivalent to a nice summer month in the UK, but drop to only 3 hours a day in July
