How about a trip to Ghana All
A Brief Summary
Southern Ghana is home to the majority of the population of the country, from the town of Keta in the east to Half Assini in the west, a large number of towns, villages and cities, including the capital and largest city Accra, hug the coastline. Accra is the commercial, political, economic and cultural heart of Ghana and representative of the history of this country from it’s time under British, Danish and Dutch interest, with the British primarily “winning” out. As such, some regions of Ghana have a distinct colonial architecture and British feel to them, while the various national forts around the city and the region are testament to the varied ownership battles contested here.
Away from Accra, which is fast becoming a very modern city, especially by west African standards, Cape Coast and Takoradi are the 2 largest town in the south of the country, both with a sad history from the Slave Trade in the 19th century, but both providing access to some very nice, albeit (in places) poorly facilitated beaches, for those seeking a little downtime in the heat.
Travel further north and you reach the vast Lake Volta, and the fabric-rich town of Kumasi, where you can have made any garment you so desire, in literally any colour you could imagine (or, if choosing the Ghanaian approach, a mixture of every colour conceivable!). It is also known as the Garden City due to it’s extensive links with a huge variety of flower species.
Yet still further north the only town of real note is Tamale, a transport hub for a huge range of bus services in sub-Saharan Africa and where you access Mole National Park, home to elephant, hippo, buffalo, warthog and antelope. It is a place well worth taking the time and effort to visit and it is by far the largest of its kind in this part of Africa.
