Western Germany is the country’s industrial heartland, but it is also a region with a much more scenic side to it than towering chimney stacks and concrete monstrosities. There are a large number of vineyards here, the wide and meandering rivers in the area accommodate a range of river cruises cutting through some beautiful scenery and there are a significant number of medieval castles to admire and enjoy.
The cities here occupy the flat river valleys between the hills that undulate extensively elsewhere. While the cities themselves are less appealing than those like Berlin or Munich, the land between them is fantastic walking or cycling territory and readily accessible from France, Belgium, Luxembourg or even the Netherlands, making this region of Germany highly appealing in a number of ways

Western Germany’s weather sees 4 distinct seasons, similar to other parts of the country. Summers here are warm and fairly sunny, with heatwaves increasingly seeing temperatures approaching 40°c a number of times a year. Rainfall comes in the form of heavy showers. Autumn months range from warm and bright in Sep, to quite cool and very overcast in Nov, with temperatures of 20 and 8°c for these months respectively. Winters are cold, damp, very overcast and see frequent light snow. Very cold weather occurs when winds blow from the north or east and temperatures drop well below -10°c during these times which can also bring heavier snows. Spring is generally mild and bright, and quite sunny and warm by May, but with some sharp showers
