How about a trip to Ethiopia Central Highlands

Often referred to as the cradle of civilisation, Ethiopia is where it, or we, all began. And while the heart of this large and populous African nation has evolved considerably since, there is still a sense of the ancient history about, ready and waiting to be discovered and an archaeologists heaven! Ethiopia is bifurcated by the northern end of the Great Rift Valley, a colossal scar gradually tearing Africa in two and the central region of Ethiopia and its sprawling capital, Addis Ababa, are on or alongside this geological marvel. Despite being the site of some of civilisations worst famines, this region is primarily lush green, fertile and hilly. This is a region of mountains, plateaus, lakes, hills, fields and a large number of towns and villages, as well as wildlife such as monkeys and nyalas and a vast array of birds. Given the terrain it is not surprising that this is becoming an increasingly popular destination for the active among us to trek, walk and cycle here, all with a splash of true, ancient history thrown in for good measure
