How about a trip to China Tibetan Plateau

China Tibetan Plateau Jun

SummaryA Brief Summary

Second only to Xinjiang in size, but yet China’s second smallest population, the Autonomous Region of Tibet has had a long and often highly fractious relationship with the rest of China, in particular the governance of Beijing, but as of writing, this region is a fully-fledged province-level area of China. It’s small population and exceptionally low population density, especially compared to the rest of China, is a result of the harsh and rugged terrain, the continual high elevation and spartan rainfall. Rocky or mountainous land dominates the terrain here with the Himalayas to the south and the vast Tibetan Plateau covering the rest of the region. The peaks to the south are the highest in the world and many soar to, or above, 8,000m in height making for some staggering vistas, but they are also the reason for this regions isolation as they prevent not only the life-giving rains from reaching here, but also make traversing the terrain exceptionally challenging. Large lakes, many of which dry up towards spring, or are ice-covered, litter the central region. Its largest city and capital Lhasa, is a location adorned with ornate buildings and a rich, if somewhat chequered history. And safe to say, the hiking and walking here are some of the best in the world

WeatherAbout the Weather

With one of the sunniest climates in China, the province of Tibet and surrounding regions see over 3000 hours of sunshine a year. Only mid summer months of Jul and Aug see slightly reduced levels of sunshine as the monsoon rains give appreciable precipitation in these months, otherwise skies remain blue for much of the year with rainfall almost unknown outside of the warmest months from May to Sep. Temperatures in summer reach 24°c on average but climb to 30°c during calm sunny weather. Humidity is at its highest during the rains and drops to below 25% in winter. Winter temperatures are not as cold as one might expect at this altitude, often remaining above freezing during the day, but well below at night. Spring and autumn are mild, sunny and dry.
