How about a trip to China East Coast

China East Coast Jan

SummaryA Brief Summary

From a small, sleepy fishing village on China’s east coast, Shanghai has grown not only into China’s largest city and the worlds largest city proper (excluding greater urban areas etc.) but it is now a true global hub in terms of finance, economics, transport, tourism and manufacturing. The land is mostly flat and uninspiring from a visual perspective within the city itself, but it has been hugely developed and its heart lies around the Bund, an extensive and highly priced waterfront promenade lined with colonial-era buildings, opposite which, across the Huangpu River, towers Pudong district’s futuristic skyline, including the 632m Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, with distinctive pink spheres. Sprawling Yu Garden has traditional pavilions, towers and ponds.. a world away from the worlds busiest container port down river. If you want true, historic, authentic China, this probably isn’t the city for you, but if you want a taste of modern China with its bustling streets and juxtaposed architectural styles and ways of living, then few places are better than Shanghai. Outside of the city it doesn’t take long for the flat and river-strewn fields to transform into lofty and jagged peaks, with some truly dramatic scenery to the south of the city and along the east coast. Getting around these parts of China can be tricky, but if you want a mix of modern city living and some getting-back-to-extreme nature, this region of China is hard to beat… except for perhaps the far southeast around Hong Kong!

WeatherAbout the Weather

With no month in Shanghai or the east coast of China being particularly sunny or dry, weather conditions remain relatively consistent year-round. The only change being seen is in temperatures, which range from cool conditions in January and 8°c, to well above 30°c in July and August. Night time temperatures in the middle of winter often drop below 0°c, but can stay close to 30°c during the middle of summer. The heaviest of the rains are from June to August, but discounting the typhoons which indirectly impact and therefore affect the region most years, no month is especially wet either. When the typhoons do hit, they bring stormy seas, high winds and very heavy rain, but seldom stay in the area for more than a couple of days, often heading further inland, or along the coast. Spring and Autumn are warm but overcast and the sunniest month of the year is July, with the dullest being January.
