The central region of Chile extends from Concepcion in the south, through the capital region of Santiago and on to Antofagasta in the north and during this 1,800km stretch, the terrain changes markedly. From Lush forested and hilly woodland on the coast, to arable fertile plains inland, the southern central area of Chile is the country’s agricultural heartland. By the time you reach Santiago further north, the land is far more mountainous with only the valleys providing lands for crops and grazing. Santiago itself is a densely packed city less than 100km from the coast, occupying a place at the foothills of the Andes and is a city steeped in history, chiefly from the colonisation of the Spanish, but with heavy Inca influences.
