How about a trip to New Zealand South Island

New Zealand South Island Nov

SummaryA Brief Summary

The north of the South Island (SI) of New Zealand is beautiful. Probably not THE most beautiful part of this rather selfishly picturesque country, as that accolade falls to the far south, but still very, very pretty indeed. The largest town here is that of Nelson, NZ’s sunniest place and one which is named after Lord Nelson himself. A small city, but one with enough to keep you busy for a day or so exploring the very quaint streets and parks before setting off to discover the large National Parks just outside the city. Nelson’s near neighbour, Blenheim, is a true wine tasters paradise, with NZ wines being some of the very best in the world and served here accompanied by some fabulous dishes amongst great scenery!
Nelson’s Bay and Tasman Bay to the north have some truly gorgeous beaches and coves if you fancy a day of idly sitting around and taking in a good book before setting off once more to a more rugged and wild side of the country.
The other major place you really ought to take yourself off to in the northern reaches of the SI, is Christchurch. This is a garden city, and a well deserved moniker it is too, being a pretty, verdant and highly charming city on NZ’s eastern most coast. Exposed to the elements, this is a city that offers everything from a quiet cup of coffee while you people watch the dog-walkers of the city pass by, to the thrill seekers of mountain biking, zip-lining or quad biking. Christchurch was even more scenic a few years back than it is today prior to the devastating earthquake in 2011, but rebuilding is well underway and this shouldn’t in any way deter you from visiting.
If you don’t like stunning scenery, some of the freshest air on the planet, great food including outstanding fresh fish accompanied by superb wines, lovely little towns ranging from the quaint and charming to mecca of adrenaline sports, and incredibly friendly locals, then I suggest going about your day.
For those of you still reading, congratulations, you’re possibly one step closer to heading out to one of the most beautiful parts of our planet. Words can paint pictures sometimes, but the sights here simply cannot be scribed, you simply have to see and experience them for yourself, so whether you’re taking life easy in Dunedin’s seaside location, skiing or hiking or biking in trendy Queenstown, or simply awestruck by the lakes, mountains and geography of Milford Sound, make the effort to head to NZ’s South Island, you’ll never forget it!

WeatherAbout the Weather

In a large sheltered bay on the northern shores of NZ’s South Island, is the country’s sunniest climate.  Nov to Mar sees 8-9 hours of sunshine a day, while even mid-winter months of Jun to Aug average more than 5 hours sunshine a day.  The further south you head, the cloudier and more overcast the weather becomes, as well as more rainy.  A lot more rainy!  Summers (Dec – Feb) average mid 20°c’s in the north of the South Island, while winters (Jun – Aug) nearer 13°c, with nights around 8-10°c colder than daytime highs.  Further south these temperatures reduce gradually with average highs around 5°c lower than further north.  Rainfall towards the north and lower elevation is seen all year, but often in light showers, whereas further south rains are heavier and more persistent, akin to the north of the UK.  Storms in NZ are common in the winter months and match the severity seen in the UK in late Autumn time, with considerable wind and rain for several days as they pass through.
