How about a trip to Northeast US

Northeast US

SummaryA Brief Summary

A lot of places in the world at the 40-50° latitudes experience occasional snowstorms during the winter months, but very few have blizzards like the north east of the US, particularly inland New York state. In the UK, 3 inches is generally regarded as “heavy snow”… in the US however, 3 inches is the amount of snow that is expected to fall each hour during blizzards which can last for days! Swept along by gale-force winds and temperatures well below 0°c, these storms are infrequent throughout the winter, but March is historically a month likely to see at least one “nor’easter” (a term used to describe these storms, based on the prevailing direction from which the howling gales originate). If you’re going to pick a place to see these enormous dumps of the white stuff, anywhere from Buffalo, through Rochester and on to Syracuse will be a good bet!

WeatherAbout the Weather

New York is another US city and state where extreme weather can be seen in any month of the year and is typical of the climate in the northeast corner of the US. While winters are traditionally cold with light snow and fairly high levels of sunshine, every year, one or two significant winter storms will move across the region. These storms can dump paralysing levels of snow and bring windchills well below -10°c. They can also occur during March or April with equally significant falls of snow, harnessing the frigid air still in place over central and eastern Canada. Spring often brings warm and sunny weather, but increased rainfall totals, with all months seeing heavy showers on a regular basis, but with temperatures over 20°c by May. June to September is very warm to hot and the sunniest time of year here, with nearly 9 hours of sunshine a day in all 4 months. The heavy showers theme continues from spring into summer. Summer can also see very hot and humid heatwaves, with temperatures around 40°c for several days or a week at a time. Autumn starts warm and sunny in September, but cools quickly and by late November light snow is probable and skies are much more overcast, but still brighter than anywhere in northwest Europe during the same months. Very infrequently, the remnants of tropical storms pass over the region dropping huge rainfall totals, these are most likely in Aug, Sep or Oct
