How about a trip to United States North California
A Brief Summary
We could have broken down California into soooo many different and smaller regions, but decided to settle on just North and South. There are long and extensive continent-sized guides to this vast and varied US state, but here we’ll cover the very basics of the area north of Fresno! Why Fresno… well, when drawing an arbitrary line, you have to start somewhere!
Northern California is a beautiful place with a rugged feel about it, from the dense forests of the far Northwest, to the Rockies in the East and the wild but stunning Pacific coastline. Naturally, this is a staggering place. If you like trees taller than you could ever imagine, Redwood National Forest will sort you right out! If you’ve got a soft spot for beautiful lakes surrounded by breath taking mountains, Lake Tahoe on the Nevada border is your kind of place. If you want mountainous forest after mountainous forest for some world-class hiking, camping, fishing and mountain biking Northern California is literally festooned with these. Maybe you have a taste for wine though, well the Napa Valley is the US’s largest and by far the most successful wine producing region. Then of course the coastline from the Oregon border down to San Fran and San Jose, with the odd beach to break up the vistas of curves and cliffs and inlets and mountains. And if you aren’t sure which of those you want to see… maybe just head to Yosemite and see a little bit of everything in one of the world’s truly great National Parks!
From a town and city perspective, there are a few very, very different offerings. Firstly San Francisco. One of the worlds great cities for a laid back, sunny and tourist-friendly few days. From the picturesque Sausalito in the north, over the Golden Gate Bridge to the heart of downtown SF, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, Lombard Street, Nob Hill, Golden Gate Park, across the bay to Oakland and of course, Alcatraz! Just south of here you’ll find San Jose, while not hugely tourist-friendly, it is perhaps worth a trip to say you’ve been to the home of Facebook, Google, Apple and the home of just about every huge tech giant on earth!
California’s state capital is Sacramento and it’s a town of historical fame from it’s place at the centre of the California Gold Rush a history which is well preserved and readily evident in a number of well documented museums. Elsewhere it is a modern, vibrant city with a good, but relatively subdued nightlife, great shopping and dining and a relatively young population, with easy access to the mountains and lakes to the east.
The other 2 main towns in Northern California are Eureka and Redding, both more subdued and laid back, but with a fairly sporty and outdoorsy feel to them, as well as being quite artsy in places. Probably not worth a long stay in their own right, but with great access to some wonderful scenery only minutes drive from the town limits.

About the Weather
San Francisco has a mild, sunny and relatively dry climate, with extremes of temperature rare and this is highly representative of the climate of coastal northern California. The year starts off cool, bright and showery with temperatures of around 15°c and fairly heavy rains, which last through until March. April and May are slightly warmer but considerably sunnier, with May the sunniest month of the year on average and temperatures of around 18°c. Mornings in May and June can be foggy, but this often clears by mid morning to leave dry and sunny days with June almost completely dry. July through to September is very dry and sunny and gradually warms, with September the warmest month of the year due to the gradual warming of the northeast Pacific Ocean, from where the majority of San Francisco’s winds originate. Summer days don’t often exceed 30°c and when they do it is only for a few days before returning to normal values of around 22°c. October to December become increasingly cool, with the last 2 months of the year noticeably wetter and cloudier. Temperatures below 0°c are rare, with winter lows averaging 8°c. Inland, towards the State capital of Sacramento, the weather is less cloudy and warmer. Summers here are some of the sunniest anywhere in the world, while the rest of the year is bright and mostly warm, although cold incursions affect here more often than coastal regions in winter
