How about a trip to Mexico East Coast

Mexico East Coast Jun

SummaryA Brief Summary

With a coastline against the Gulf of Mexico of about 500km and the vast majority of this being soft white sand, you’d be forgiven for thinking this might just be the best beach-state in the world (Tamaulipas), let alone Mexico. But… not quite. While the beaches are wonderful and genuinely go on for mile after mile, the vast majority have, at best, a little shack where you can buy an old bottle of water or a light snack, while many others are simply deserted and devoid of any infrastructure or people (except hardy fishermen) whatsoever. There are a few exceptions of course, such as the very far south of the state at Tampico, or La Pesca in mid-state, but on the whole, they’re desolate in their beauty.
Inland, you’ll find the state capital, Cuidad Victoria and a whole heap of farmland and hilly terrain. CV is a moderate size town at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range, making for a stunning backdrop for your time visiting its botanical gardens, zoos and museums, all before you head into the wild for a few days adventure.
Further south, and occupying a long sliver of land on the Gulf of Mexico, you come to the state of Veracruz. Stretching from the mid-Caribbean coastline all the way down to virtually the southernmost part of the country, this state has more beachfront than any other Mexican state (excluding Baja California) and bearing this in mind you’d think with all that coastal real estate it would be a mecca for beachgoers, and in part you’d be right. There are some glorious stretches of long, wide sandy beaches here, but they’re not as geared-up for tourists as you’d expect, making them feel more authentic and where big-city Mexicans take their holidays!
As with much of the central / southern / jungle region of Mexico, Mayan and Aztec ruins are found in large numbers here, but they’re definitely not the only attraction in Veracruz.
Geographically, you have Mexico’s highest mountain to gaze at in awe.. or ascend if the mood takes you, you have some sensational white water rafting, festivals take place here like they’re going out of fashion, and the 2 main cities of Veracruz and Xalapa are well worth seeing. The former being a large, boisterous and exuberant coastal city with a great nightlife and the latter a genuinely pretty little city which is away from the intense heat of the rest of the state and a lovely place to amble round for a few days.
