How about a trip to United States East Coast
A Brief Summary
From the beaches and the historic town of Charleston in South Carolina, north through the other Carolina, to Virginia and on to tiny Delaware and Maryland, the central east coast of the US plays host to some delightful scenery, strong accents, some favourable and unfavourable history and some of the most important parts of this huge country’s relatively short time as a nation. This area comprises the majority, in terms of landmass at least, of the original 13 colonies which began the long and often bloody journey to the 50 US States that we know… and kind of love, today.
The Carolinas, North and South, have a wealth of huge, long, sandy beaches on their Atlantic coasts and are a favourite summer haunt of many an American who’ve decided Florida is too crowded and The Hamptons too expensive! The city of Charleston, in SC, has one of the best preserved “Old Towns” in the US.. and we’re not talking “old” in US terms, which is often younger than cutlery in British residences, we’re talking several hundred years old and a truly charming place to wander around. Wilmington is another large coastal town in NC which sees huge influxes of people in the summer months looking for a city with a great beach and a huge array of dining and watering holes. Inland in the Carolinas, the Blue Ridge and Great Smokey Mountains begin to dominate, rising high into the humid air in summer and adorned with snow for much of the winter. You’ll find world class hiking, biking, driving and camping out here, but don’t come unprepared, especially in winter, the weather can turn here very quickly leaving you in more of a predicament than you might find amusing! The main sport in this region aside from the endless number of golf courses, is Nascar!
Virginia is a state renowned for its landscapes and history, particularly its place in US military history, with huge bases throughout the state. This is also arguably where you’ll find some of the best golf courses in the US! The food here, especially sea food, is to rival anything Maine / Massachusetts can put on your plate and in coastal areas, you’ll be dining with some glorious views of the Atlantic.
Maryland, Delaware and Washington DC are at the northern end of the region and, like the others, have great access to the Atlantic Ocean, be it on wide sandy beaches, or through the huge number of harbours and sailing vessels littering the coastline. Key cities in the region are Baltimore, a gritty but slowly gentrifying city only a stone throw from the nations capital, Washington DC. Ocean City, a thriving and vibrant town which has a huge array of options for perhaps the younger audience, or at least those young and at heart and not yearning for bed by 10pm!
DC is of course where you’ll no doubt start or end up in this area, the home of the USs political decision-making and powerplays and often home to more global decisions than we would probably all like. But, regardless, it’s a must-see if you’re anywhere near here, despite having no doubt seen every inch in every gung-ho American film and TV drama in the last 40 years, there’s a sense of pomp and ceremony and almost fanfare about the Capitol and White House region. The rest of Washington, except the bars and restaurants catering to the Government employees, all of which are rather good, is largely lacking from the most advanced nation on earth’s capital, although finding a good museum and shopping isn’t difficult either.

About the Weather
Summers here are hot and humid, with sunshine and heavy showers, some of which can be thundery and bring significant rainfall in a short period of time. Averaging 9 hours sunshine a day from late Apr to Aug it’s seldom a total washout, while temperatures average 29°c during the same period, but often climb above 35°c. Autumn is warm and bright, but less sunny than might be expected with hurricane’s passing nearby a few times a season, although rarely hitting the region directly. Winters are mild, wet and bright, but can have temperatures as high as 28°c or as low as -10°c and while snow is unusual, when it does fall it is often heavy and disruptive. Spring is warm and sunny with the usual heavy showers and high humidity
