How about a trip to Cambodia

Cambodia Feb

SummaryA Brief Summary

Most of Cambodia is dominated by 2 watery features:  the mighty Mekong river, and Tonle Sap, a vast inland lake.  Both combined they create some of the most fertile soils on earth among the flatlands of this France-sized southeast Asian nation.  As a result, farming here is a way of life and carried out on an enormous scale employing a significant % of the country’s population via tens of thousands of smallholdings and individually owned and farmed pockets of land. Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital is located towards the border of Vietnam and is by far the biggest city in the country, being the economic, cultural and historic (definitely not all of it good history) heartland of Cambodia, where you’l find extensive colonial architecture from it’s time under French occupation, juxtaposed against traditional pagodas and modern skyscrapers.

Tourism here is now thriving following on from decades of dictatorial regimes including that of Pol Pot, arguably one of the largest genocide leaders of the last century, with between 2 and 8 million Cambodians killed during his tyranical rule.  The people here are exceptionally friendly and welcoming, the food sublime, and the scenery, while less dramatic than neighbouring Vietnam, equally beguiling.  It really is almost imperative that you visit some of the museums throughout the country even if just to understand the horrors of the regimes here.  But perhaps finish off on a lighter note in somewhere like Angkor Wat, the breathaking “city of temples” in the north of the country.
