If for some strange reason you’re offended by the sight of olive trees, then perhaps you might want to avoid the “heel” of Italy, as this is one of the worlds most concentrated olive-growing regions. If on the other hand you’re a die-hard Bond fan and want to see where some of the iconic clips from the latest instalment were filmed, (in Matera), then this is absolutely the place for you. One of Italy’s unsung regions and come in the off-season and you’ll find it remarkably quiet, with little going on. But mid-summer, this place is busy, with tiny, pretty, hillside villages bustling with people, and quaint, but very touristy seaside towns like Polignano a Mare jam-packed with people wanting a spot on one of Italy’s most iconic beaches (which is very small by the way!) There are a number of medieval sights and towns within this region, lively towns like Bari and Lecce and the obligatory fine wines.

About the Weather
This region of Italy sees hot, sunny summers with occasional showers and frequent coastal breezes and moderate humidity. Extremes of temperatures here are unusual, but do occur with highs above 40°c from Jun to Aug possible. Autumns are less hot after Sep, less sunny and wetter than summers, but still pleasant until Nov when skies become more overcast and storms affect the region more frequently. Nov to Feb is mild by day and quite cool at night, with fairly cloudy skies and rain every few days on average, sometimes heavy. Winter storms do occur here bringing strong winds and torrential rains. Spring starts cool, but warms up by early May when skies clear and rains decrease. Temperatures range from 14°c in Dec to 31°c in Jul and Aug, with Spring seeing values of 20°c and Autumn averaging 24°c by day
